Call me Mama

Call me Mama
By Kay Green, www.MyPreciousKid.com

I have always known I was meant to be a mom. As soon as I was big enough to pack a baby on my hip I borrowed babies anywhere I could find. At age 10 I started baby sitting. I cared for my niece and god-daughter whenever possible. At age 23 my husband and I had our first child. That beautiful baby girl made be know even more that I was destined by God to be a mother. Oh the joy of holding that precious bundle.

I was also blessed to attend the birth of 7 other precious babies over the years. Those children even though not birthed by me, became special children in my life. What a gift to be able to be present as new life emerges from within. The marvel of what God has created in us, through us.

God blessed us with 2 more children (a boy then a girl) in the next 5 years. I delighted in loving them, training them, teaching them, investing in these precious lives. MY precious husband continues to give me so much help and support in being the parents our children need. I LOVE being a mother. And my three precious children have taught me so much about love and joy.

Twelve years after the birth of our 3rd child we adopted a new born. That baby girl taught me even more about mothering. I learned that mothering is not about blood tie but about heart tie. I learned that I could breastfeed an adopted daughter in the same way I nursed my birth children. I learned that through prayer and careful watching I had the insight on how to parent this child, who was so different than my other three.

I learned that I can be an advocate to get the medical help needed for my child. I knew this child had an issue I could not put my finger on. I was certain something was out of alignment for her. I prayed and watched and pressed for information. I finally asked my doctor for testing to rule out some sensory issues. That testing brought the key to this child that I had been looking for. Through the process we gained so much wisdom and tools for being even better parents to this precious child.

I thank God everyday for the privilege of being mama to 4 incredible individuals. And I thank God for a husband who treats me with such respect and support. My family has given me so much joy and love in life. They have taught me things about myself. They have stretched me and caused me to reach farther than I knew possible. They have challenged and encouraged me. I am the person I am today because of these 4 people who call me Mama.

Car Seat Sharing Safety

Car Seat Sharing Safety
Can I pass my child's car seat on to a friend?
By Kay Green, www.MyPreciousKid.com
Copyright 2005

Your daughter has outgrown her car seat. What can you do with it? A friend is in need of a car seat. Can you safely pass it along? What things should you look for? How can I make sure it is safe to pass along my seat.

"Always ask if it has ever been in a car when there was an accident (sudden force can damage the plastic even though it is not noticeable to the naked eye) and is it less than 6 years old. The plastic does deteriorate over time, and 6 years is the longest you can use a car seat. We had car seats for my oldest granddaughter, who would have been 7 last Sept., and we couldn't use them for the newest baby because they were too old." Says Anita of http://www.blessedenterprises.org/

"If the car seat was made in the last 7-8 years, there should be an expiration date on it. My daughter will be 6 in May, and her car seat expires in October of 2005. That was the date imprinted on the car seat." says Cris of http://phoenixcandlelites.com/cimfundraiser.htm

THE TEST - These are both valid points. Before passing on a car seat I like to do the following:1. Be certain the seat was never in a car accident2. Check the age of the seat3. Check with the seat manufacturer for recalls4. Check for any breakage or tearingIf the car seat is free from accident, recalls, and breakage and the seat belts are strong then you can pass the car seat onto a friend. If your seat does not pass the test then please do not pass the car seat along.

RIGHT SIZE - Be sure your child is in the RIGHT size car seat. Every car seat comes with weight and height requirements for that seat. Please follow them. I have often seen children riding in car seats clearly not the right size for them. I saw a 15 month old child in an infant carrier car seat. The mother insisted that because he was under 20 pounds she could not move him to a front facing. She was right. BUT what he needed was a rear facing convertible car seat made for a child of his height and weight. His head was all the way to the top of the car seat. It needed to be no less than one inch from the top of the seat.

IN AN ACCIDENT - If you own a car seat that is ever in a car accident please mark the plastic of the frame with a permanent marker "IN ACCIDENT - DESTROY" then break it down and put it in the garbage. Your own car insurance will almost always pay for a replacement car seat after a car accident. Call them to request this. Do not risk putting your child in a car seat that could have underlying damage that puts your child at risk.

CAR SEAT ID CARD - Always have an car seat ID card attached to your child's car seat. This card should have your child's name, age, weight, height, medical info, 5 contact numbers for family members and a medical release signature. This card can make the difference in getting quick care or finding a family member to come get your child in an accident where you can not care for your child. We as moms love to share our baby items with friends. With car seats it is very important that we carefully look at all the criteria before passing along car seats to be certain the child we want to share with is safe as well.

Shopping Cart Safety

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2005

Shopping Cart Safety Rules

1. Always cover the shopping cart with a shopping cart cover.

2. Make sure your child is securely buckled into the shopping cart.

3. Wipe down the cart with anti-bacterial wipes.

4. Do not allow your child to stand up in the shopping cart.

5. Do not allow older children to stand on the side/back and ride as it may tip the chart.

6. Never leave your child alone in the shopping cart.

Protect others from your child's germs and diaper leaks too.

HAVE YOU EVER had a sick child. You take them to the doctor, then run to the store to pick up the prescription. Of course your child sits in the shopping cart while you are there. Putting them in the shopping cart cover protects both your child from other peoples germs during their low resistance ill time, PLUS protects other children from your child's germs.

HAVE YOU EVER had your child's diaper leak while out shopping? Of course you can not take the time to sterilize the shopping cart they were sitting in? If you child is sitting in your own shopping cart cover then all the mess is confined. Simply roll up the shopping cart cover, Velcro it closed and throw it in your diaper bag. All the mess is inside. At home simply put the shopping cart cover in the washer.

HAVE YOU EVER had a teething baby with you while shopping. Of course they lean over and put their mouth on the nice smooth shopping car bar UGH! How many germs are on that bar. With a clean shopping cart cover your child is chewing on the toys and fabric you brought with you. You know they are clean. You know your child is safe from germs.

Safe Sensory Toys Help Kids!

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2005

SENSORY INTEGRATION - My youngest child was recently diagnosed with Sensory Integration disorder. And my third child was a kinesthetic learner child. So over the course of time I have founds toys and activities that sensory and kinesthetic children love. I wanted to give my children toys that were safe but gave them sensory input.

TAGGIES BLANKET- Taggies produce a wonderful line of blankies, toys and books with a sensory feel. Taggies have tags of satin ribbon sew in folds all around the edges. Babies love to rub these satin tags between their fingers and on their face. The fleece of the blankets are soft and comfortable. The 12x12 Taggie Small makes a perfect travel companion for babies and toddlers.

TAGGIES TOYS - Taggies also make a Take-a-long toy with the same fleece and tags. It hooks easily to the car seat or stroller to take with you. The newest Taggies product is the I Love You Book with tags sewn on the edges. I love to take these with me in the car seat and stroller. Sensory kids love to have a familiar item they can count on when going to new places. It gives them a calm feeling.

BABY RATTLES - Discovery Toys carries a line of safe sensory rattles that your babies will love. These are the highest quality safe toys your children will love. My favorite is the rain stick rattle. It is filled with bright colored beads the fall up and down the stick making a soothing sounds. I needed to have a good variety of these kinds of rattles and baby toys so I could swap them in and out of our bag keeping her interested.

SHOPPING CART COVERS - Shopping carts present a new challenge for sensory kids. They want to experience everything, and most through their mouth. I always worried if the last child in that seat was ill or well? And have you ever had a diaper leak in the cart UGH So I found a great shopping cart cover that not only protects my child but also gives them a sensory delight with attached toys and fabrics that make a great crinkle noise that my baby loves.

GAME BOY - As Haley has gotten to preschool age I was looking for a take a long toy that gives her sensory input. ......................................

Tsunami in Asia leaves orphans

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2005

ORPHANS - Today my heart is breaking for the many children left orphaned by the tsunami is Asia last week. As an adoptive mom my heart goes our to them. Many of these children were vacationing with parents from other countries. These children had no ID. Can you imagine how much it could help a child is this situation to have a ID bracelet? The ID bracelet or Shoe ID Tag could contain their parent name, hotel where staying, home phone, plus the name and number of a relative in their home town that could be contacted? Do you protect your child is this way when traveling?

CRUISE SAFETY - I got the privilege to be on a cruise ship this past month. I was again surprised to see so many children on board and on shore for the excursions with no physical ID. What if the child got separated from the parent on board a ship of 2500 people. An ID bracelet could contain the parents name and room number plus a name and number of a relative back home. And when onshore excursions the bracelet could contain the ships name and room number and parents name too. Our ID bracelets are even waterproof so can be used while your child is swimming.

PROTECTION - It really is a shame we have to be so proactive in our children's safety. But this world is changing. And we have to do everything we can to protect our children. It is like life insurance you buy hoping you never need to use it. We all hope and pray it never happens to us but it can happen in a moment in time. Do not be left say "I wish I had?"........................................................................
