Tips for The Expectant Mother

If you're a mom, then most likely you get excited when you have a friend or even an acquaintance to find out that they are expecting. More often than not, finding out that one is expecting leads to a conversation that includes lots of “know how”. You know what I mean everyone in the group seems to know more than each other about pregnancy, babies, and other related topics. Pretty soon the conversation sounds more like a list of tips for the expectant mother. And honestly, that may be good. As we could all use a few tips now and again right? Especially, when it comes to bringing a new baby into the world.

So, the following are a few tips for any expectant mother that you know, who knows it may even be you. They include:

1. You may have to change your diet. In fact, expect a change in your diet in some form or fashion while you're expecting. Either you will have to eat more frequently to prevent morning sickness or you will have to abstain from eating certain types of food to keep from getting ill, or you may have to eat more just to feel full, no matter what there is sure to be a change in your diet.

2. There are certain things you should avoid. These include: the kitty litter box, chemicals, alcohol, drugs, smoking, and fish with high levels of mercury. Some of these things seem like a given while others you may wonder about, regardless take the tips of others and avoid them.

3. Take a break. Pregnant women need frequent breaks as you will most likely experience more fatigue than you normally do when you're not with child. Taking a nap during pregnancy can do you much good.

While taking a rest be sure to read Child Safety Guide for Expectant Parents http://www.mypreciouskid.com/child-safety-book.html These are special purchase price of $7 for a limited time.

7 Tips to Child Safety in the Holidays

In this business season we are out in public with our kids a lot. How can we make certain your children are safe and secure? What things can you do to feel at peace while shopping with your kids? As a mom of 4 I learned to teach them early what to do in scary situations.

1. Teach your child to wear an ID. Your child should wear a physical ID (ID Bracelet, Shoe ID Tag, Personalized Dog Tag) every time you go out. The ID should contain your cell phone number so if you are separated you can be reached

2. Teach your child "If Mommy is lost find another mommy with kids and show her your ID so she can call me

3. Teach them to stay put if you get separated. Wait with the mom they found in the location they lost you.

4. Teach them to be attentive. "What color is Mommy wearing today?"What is Mommy's other name?"

5. Play "What if?" Game - "What should you do IF Mommy is lost?"

6. Take a picture of your child with your cell phone as you start shopping. If a child is separated you want to provide a photo. Better yet carry a photo ID card of your child. Put an ID on your child's car seat too.

7. Keep all children under age 12 with you. Do not allow them to wonder away to look in different aisles while shopping. Where you go they should go. I teach my 8 yr old daughter to keep one hand on the cart.

POTTY TRAINING

Potty training a child has got to be one of the most difficult parenting tasks. Like with most other things associated with children, every child proves to be very different, whether it is due to personality, or maturity, potty training for even the parent who has done it multiple times can still end up being a struggle.

You may have heard that girls or easier or maybe just the opposite that boys potty train faster, no matter what you've heard once you begin to train your own child you'll begin o have opinions and stories of your own. Some stories you may be dieing to share or others which you wish had never happened to you.

No matter how difficult potty training may seem as you begin it and are going through it the truth is it is something that your child must do in their own time, and on their own schedule. It is like many other facets of life a learning process, maybe even as much for you as for them.

Try to be as understanding as you can with your child as they go through the process of potty training. Keeping your cool and your patience will make things go much more smoothly. Do not set your expectations too high from the beginning and you will be successful.

Also try to make the process fun for the both of you. Getting into the process and making it something you and your child can look forward to doing together rather than dreading on a daily basis. Then, before you know it they will be a happy independent potty goer.

Check out Kay's POTTY 101 article and awesome potty training products to make the process even easier.

Disaster Preparedness

Disaster Preparedness
Dr. Jeffrey Upperman, director of the Disaster Preparedness project at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles

Imagine it is the middle of the day. Your kids are in school, you are at the office. The building begins to sway and then the lights go out. You grab your phone and call your child's school, but you cannot get through. The building starts to shake violently, like nothing you've felt before. Is this the quake they've been warning everyone about? Where is your child? Is she safe? Who is taking care of her? Is she as frightened as you are?

Most parents work to make sure their children are prepared to cope with whatever the world throws at them. We help them with their homework to make sure they are ready for school. We try to make sure they eat the right foods. And, we want to keep them out of harm's way. But do parents really teach their children what they need to know in the event of a disaster? Many parents in California have an emergency kit in the house and car, but are our children ready? Would they know how to cope and keep themselves safe if they were separated from us?

Dr. Jeffrey Upperman is director of the Disaster Preparedness project at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. He has spent years making sure public health institutions are prepared to address the needs of children in an emergency. Through his practice he has also learned a good deal about what families can do to prepare themselves-and their children-for the consequences of a disaster.

Experts say that children as young as age three can begin to understand earthquakes, floods, fires and other disasters. They should also be able to understand some simple steps you can take together to ensure they stay safe if you are not there to help them. Dr. Upperman's top tips for you and your children:

* Create a "business card" or ID CARD for your child just like yours. Include their name, address, phone number on the front, and a list of emergency contacts on the back, including out-of-state relatives and your pediatrician. Make them promise to keep the cards in their pocket or backpack.

* Coordinate with other parents to arrange for each of your
children to have a "buddy" - another child in their class or playgroup that they should stay close to in an emergency. Get parents and buddies together every six months to review family disaster plans.

* Make sure your children know who to call if they cannot reach
you - designate an out-of-town friend or relative to be a point of contact. Once a month, schedule a time for your child to call that relative just to say hello. The more regularly they communicate, the more comfortable they will be calling in an emergency.

* Every household has features that can be dangerous in the event
of a disaster-things like overhead lights, unsecured water heaters or bookcases, toxic or flammable household cleaners or chemicals. Get your children to help you search the house and make a list of potential hazards. Use the search as an opportunity to teach them about the importance of household safety.

* Volunteer to work with your children, their classmates and their
teacher to create a checklist the class can use in the event of an earthquake or other emergency. Create the checklist as a group, and produce pocket-size copies of the checklist for your children to keep in their desks at school.

* Create a list with your children of all the "helpers" they can
count on if there is an emergency and you are not together. The list would include teachers, doctors, nurses, firemen, policemen. With young children, create a collage with pictures of the helpers. The goal is to ensure kids will feel comfortable and safe with caretakers and emergency workers.

* Have your child create a shopping list for the family's disaster
preparedness kit and shop for the items together. Have them help you pick the storage place, and put them in charge of one of the items in the kit.

* Role play with your children-act out what might happen at
school. Let your child be the adult, and you play the child who needs to be told what to do in an emergency.

* Talk to your children and make sure they talk to you. When there
is news of a disaster or emergency in the world, use the news as a "teachable moment," a way to remind your child how to prepare so that your family will be safe.

This is what I know about blogging...

GUEST BLOG ARTICLE

1) content needs to be added on a regular schedule. Minimum is 3 times a week, more is better.

2) blog posts should be around 250 words per post. This is long enough to deliver your message, but short enough to keep people reading and interested..

3) break up your paragraphs with bulleted lists, bold words and headings. (Not every single paragraph, but where appropriate).

4) you MUST have a photo for every post. That said, use ONLY one photo per post unless you need more to illustrate your point or show how to do something (or if you're a photographer doing a photography blog).

5) use good photos. If you are not a photographer, use stock photos. (always keep a digital camera with you. You never know when something will pop up that is a perfect shot for your blog post)

6) keep your content focused. if your posts don't stay on track, you lose people. If you have something off topic to talk about, start another blog.

7) for the overall look of your blog, break up your space. Don't have one huge blank, white page with text on it. Use templates, as this will help with the layout.

8) make your "about me" section really personable. People feel more comfortable reading your blog if they feel like they are getting to know you. It establishes a connection with your readers.

9) when somebody comments, you should comment back on your blog, as well as in a direct email to the reader. This encourages repeat visitors.

10) have fun with your blog. if it becomes a chore, this will show up in your writing as well as your readership.

POTTY TRAINING 101

I have had the wonderful privilge of potty training my own 4 kids plus helping dozens of moms train their children. The newest member is my 21 month old grand daughter. http://marteneylove.blogspot.com/2008/09/potty-time.html
She is doing great with it.
Below is the article I wrote to help other moms train their children using my system.

I teach an online class for moms at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PottyTeach101/

You will also find product such as the potty doll, traning pants, and toilet seat at http://www.mypreciouskid.com/potty-training-doll.html
POTTY TEACHING 101 Kay Green © 2008

READINESS: Haley had never gone in the potty when we started - even though I had been sitting her on it for several weeks before bath, when I went to the Bathroom etc. At age 18 months I start pre-training. I get a potty video that we watch every day. I got potty books that we read every day. We started talking about potty.

Her readiness signs to me were that she could follow a simple command (pick up the ball), she would show a sign when she when potty in diaper (hold herself, do the little dance, hide for BM), and was staying dry an hour or more at a time. She was between 21-24 months. I have found that 21-24 months is the window that I see that almost all kids are ready unless medical, physical or mental disability. I trained all 4 of my kids between this age range, with them being completed by their 2nd birthday. And I have helped dozens of moms train their children in this same age window.

PARENTS: You are right to wait until you are ready. When you know you can commit a couple weeks to it and be there to help with every accident very quickly. Look over your calendar and find a 2 week window when you can give this your full attention.

BOYS: Potty Teach them sitting down. I do not let them stand up while training. We do this for several reasons: bathroom cleanliness and it encourages then to have their bowel movement in the toilet. Some moms who train them standing up have issues getting them to have a BM. My hubby insists that my son learn sitting down. You know I never have pee on the toilet unless a visiting man is in our home!

BEFORE YOU START

At age 18 months I do the following
1. Buy 10-12 pairs of training pants
2. Buy 3 pairs of vinyl covers
3. Read TOILET TRAINING IN LESS THAN A DAY
4. Have my child watch a potty VIDEO each day
5. Read a potty BOOK to my child each day
6. Practice giving them verbal instructions ( bring mama the ball)
7. Get a potty seat or potty ring. Let the child see and sit on it.
8. Get a potty doll that wets
9. Buy dollar tree treats for reward system

BEFORE starting: Things to consider finishing:
Wean from bottle and nursing and binky
Have child in their own bed
Teach them to pull pants and up and down on own

WHEN TO START:
When mom is ready to focus and can stay home for most of the next 2 weeks. When the child is staying dry for an hour or 2 during the day.
When child can follow verbal cues (pick up the ball). OPTIMAL AGE: 21-24 months in my opinion. (age 24+ months may take twice as long to train for some children because of will issues) I personally find training between 21-24 months easier than potty training between 24-36 months. At age 2 they love to say NO! Before age 2 most kids love to mimic what you are doing.

START and do NOT STOP: Every time you put a pull-up or diaper on them after starting the training you may confuse them and cause the training to take longer.

Now there may be times that you make a decision to stop the training for personal reasons. Everyone has seasons in their life. That is fine. Just know that the next time you start it may take twice as long from the mixed messages.

REMEMBER: Accidents are not to be avoided. Accidents are a teaching tool. You cannot potty teach w/o accidents. The urine leak down the leg feels out of control to them. Most kids will say Uh-oh the first time. Also the leaking accident prompts the parent to act quickly.

TRAINING: Toilet Teaching is just like teaching them to eat with a spoon, stay in their car seat, dress themselves, and obey their parents. You are the parent and treat it like other areas of obedience. Make it fun and encourage them but expect them to comply. Expect and want accidents. This is what teaches them the consequences and the need to potty in the toilet

PULL-UPS: NO diapers or paper pull-ups ever - get them out of the house.
They may ask for them back. I just say the diapers are all gone since she is a big girl.
If you give them back the diapers they will usually regress and it will take longer next time. Go forward. Pull-ups will delay the training process. If you must use a pullup at night put it over a pair of training pants.

The biggest challenge for me in the first few days is the child learning to turn ON the urine flow. Some kids get this faster than others. Haley got it the third day. Some kids get it the first day.

THE SYSTEM: Train the DOLL to go Potty. Take the child to potty often. Set a timer. Give immediate positive reinforcement when they go in toilet. Practice walking to the potty, clean up and change clothes for every accident. MY CHILD: With his system Haley did not go in potty at all first couple days. We quickly changed after every accident. She would grab herself and say uh-oh when she went since the cloth makes the feelings wet and uncomfortable. Third day she said uh-oh and had not gone in panties so I took her to potty and she went. We clapped, shouted, got a treat, called daddy! Over the next 3 days every day was less accidents and more successes. After a week she had it mostly down so I could take her out. I used vinyl pants over cloth to protect when out and about.

DAY ONE: I taught Haley how to have the doll go potty in the big toilet rewarding the child when the dolly goes potty. We played this game off and on all day. This is the teaching day.

DAY TWO: POTTY PARTY: I tell her she is a big girl like dolly. Put her in CLOTH training pants give her lots to drink. Every half hour check panties. If dry take to potty. If goes in potty reward with candy or sticker and lots of praise. Expect lots of accidents the first couple days until they get the uh-oh and are still dry. REWARD EVERY SUCCESS! For every accident help her run to the potty and say Uh-oh we must potty in the toilet then help her change into dry pants. Practice walking back and forth from the place of accident to potty.

CONTINUE for the next 2 weeks. Praise every success. Help change every accident quickly. At the end of 2 weeks you will be having more successes than accidents. I find most kids really get it in this 2 week period.

TIMER: Use your timer. At first I set it for 30 minutes. I take her in every 30 minutes until we have a dry day. Then I go to 45 minutes until we have a dry day. Then I move to 1 hour. I stay at sending them to the potty every hour for several weeks. Then as they start asking to go potty you can move the timer to 1.5-2 hours.

BED TIME: For nap and bed put a sheet protector under the sheet. Put on two pairs of cloth training pants and vinyl pants over. Change them to dry panties immediately upon waking. Use vinyl pants over cloth training pants only when out in public or in bed.

OLDER CHILDREN: If your child is over 24 months expect it to take longer as you are in the MY WILL stage. They may fight you. You have to be the parent and firmly, lovingly, and with joy help them comply. Make it fun and exciting. Diapers are no longer an option. I do not ASK if they have to go potty. I ANNOUNCE that it is POTTY TIME. With my son I use to scoop him up over my shoulder and dance to the potty with him laughing.

I am not the expert at all but do have 4 successes under my belt and have helped many other moms succeed as well with this system

POTTY READINESS QUIZ

The Potty Training Readiness Quiz

Potty training is easier and happens faster if your child is truly ready in all three areas: physical, cognitive and social. But the big question is: How do you know when your child is ready? If you have never traveled this road before, you likely don't even know what signs to look for. Take this quiz to find out where your child is on the readiness spectrum.

1. I can tell by watching that my child is wetting or filling his diaper:

a. Never.
b. Sometimes.
c. Usually.

2. My toddler's diaper needs to be changed:

a. Frequently, every hour or two.
b. It varies.
c. Every two to three hours--sometimes less frequently.

3. My child understands the meaning of wet, dry, clean, wash, sit, and go:

a. No.
b. Some of them.
c. Yes.

4. When my child communicates her needs, she:

a. Says or signs a few basic words and I guess the rest.
b. Gets her essential points across to me.
c. Has a good vocabulary and talks to me in sentences.

5. If I give my child a simple direction, such as, "put this in the toy box," she:
a. Doesn't understand or doesn't follow directions.
b. Will do it if I coach or help her.
c. Understands me and does it.

6. My child can take his pants off and put them on:

a. No.
b. With help he can.
c. Yes.

7. When I read a book to my child, he:

a. He ignores me.
b. Sometimes listens, sometimes wanders off.
c. Sits, listens and enjoys the story.

8. My toddler wants to do things "all by myself":

a. Never.
b. Sometimes.
c. All the time!

9. I think that it's the right time to begin potty training:

a. No.
b. I'm undecided.
c. Yes.

Total the number of responses for each letter:

a. __________ b. __________ c. ___________
QUIZ SCORE:

Most answers are A: Wait. Your little one doesn't seem to be ready just yet. Test again in a month or two.

Most answers are B: Time for pre-potty training--get ready! Your child is not quite ready for active training, but you can take many steps to prepare your toddler for the future. Gradual introduction of terms and ideas will make potty training easier when the time comes.

Most answers are C: Your toddler is ready to use the potty! It's time to start your potty training adventure. Good luck, and have fun!

Are you between two scores? Just like any parenting situation, there are choices to make. If your child is hovering between two categories, it's time to put your intuition to good use. Your knowledge of your own child can direct you toward the right plan of action.

Safe Sippy

I have been reading more and more about the dangers of certain plastics for our kids. So as a mom and grandmother I went looking for a better solution to the plastic sippy cup. One of the moms in the new moms class I teach sent me a link to the SAFE SIPPY cup. I was impressed. So I called the company and spoke to the president about his product and ideas. I was even more excited then.

As a small company I am very careful about what products I carry. I like to bring in a sample and test every product before selling it. So now my 8 yr old daughter and 20 month old granddaughter both use the SAFE SIPPY. They are very happy with them.

We brought in the first 2 cases and were surprised when they sold out in 10 days. When we tried to order them we found the company was out of stock of the 16,000 they recently created. So we order KLEAN KANTEEN sippy cups in the mean time.

We are happy to say we now have both the Safe Sippy ( pink, blue or green) and the Klean Kanteen (silver, pink and blue - 12 oz, 18 oz, 27 oz) in stock online.

I personally like the SAFE SIPPY for the younger children. It has removable handles and a firm sippy straw shaped opening. It also has colorful silicone wrapper over the stainless steel.

I am finding the older kids really liek the KLEAN KANTEEN with the sports bottle top. They have a look the older kids seem to really like.

Which sippy water bottle would you child prefer?

CAR SEAT SAFETY Article

CAR SEAT SAFETY - As parents we do everything we can to make sure our children are safe. I have children ranging from 7 years to 24 Years. So I have seen the safety guidelines change a lot during that time. When my oldest child came home from the hospital a car seat was not required. I did however buy one before she was born. The rules for car seats vary from state to state. Please check with your state to be sure you are following the current car seat rules.

In OREGON the rules changed July 1, 2007.
Now babies must be rear facing until both 20 pounds and 1 year old
Children must be in a car seat ( i.e. 5 point harness, not a booster seat) until over 40 pounds
And children 41 pounds to 8 years (or 4' 9" tall) must be in a booster seat.

TRAVEL OUT OF STATE - Also if you travel with your children check out the rules where you are traveling too. We are required to follow that states rules not our own states. In an accident where children are not in the right car seat according to the law the parents are being charged. Please plan ahead.

FEDERAL GUIDELINE - However no matter what your state rules say the Federal safety guidelines suggest:
!. Rear facing until full weight of the car seat ( usually 30 pound)
2. 5 Point harness until at least 40 pounds but to 65 pound is better
3. Booster until 4' 9"

REAR FACING - 12 months and 20 pounds minimum is the law. However the new studies are suggesting that infants stay rear facing until age 2 or more. In Sweden they keep them rear facing to the full weight limit of their car seat, which in usually 33 pounds ( nearly 3 years old). Because they do this they only had 8 deaths in 5 years in car accidents involving children rear facing. REAR FACING VIDEO

I spoke with a man this week whose wife and children were hit in a car accident. The van was totaled. All three kids were in car seats. The infant that was rear facing was fine. The 4 year old in a 5 point harness was fine. The 18 month old who was forward facing had neck and face bruises and trauma from the crash. When forward facing and so young their little heads are whipped back and forth with much force. If you are considering turning your 1 year old forward facing please watch this.
VIDEO and another VIDEO

FIVE POINT HARNESS - If you have moved your child out of a 5 point harness please watch this VIDEO. The longer we keep them in the safer they are. Children are safer in a 5 point harness than in a booster seat with a seat belt alone. The 5 point harness keeps them securely in the seat. The seat belt allows more room for their body to be throw forward or for them to slip under. Several children under age 5 in booster seats have been killed. Keep your children safer by keeping them in a 5 point harness longer. The RADIAN 65 CAR SEAT keeps them in a 5 point harness until 65 pounds. The RADIAN 80 CAR SEAT keeps them in a 5 point harness until 80 pounds.

BOOSTER SEATS - Most state laws require a booster seat until age 6 or 8. Our state just changed from 6 year and 60 pounds to 8 years and 80 pounds. The American Academy of Pediatrics goes a little further and says that most kids aren't ready for regular seat belts until "the child reaches about 4'9" in height and is between 8 to 12 years of age." Also even if your state rule for car seats is less than the 8 years, the federal guideline now recommends booster seats until the child is 4' 9" so the seat belt fits them correctly.

CSI MIAMI

What a surprise. I got orders yesterday for our TEDDY BEAR CHILD LOCATOR. http://www.mypreciouskid.com/child-locator.html It seems that it was used in a case on CSI MIAMI on Monday night. As a small online business it is always exciting when our products reach TV.

We had the opportunity for our TABLE TOPPER TO GO to be seen on the TODAY SHOW earlier this year. They showed the products that save moms time. And they even showed our web site URL. http://www.mypreciouskid.com/kid-placemat.html

From there the RACHEL RAY SHOW contacted us to send them a couple products. We sent our amazing CHORE CHART. The products did not make it on air as the whole segment was cut for time constraints. Put they did put out link on their site recommending the products.

Well it has been an exciting week for sure!

5 Point Harness Solution

NEW CAR SEAT - After watching the 5 point harness safety video on u-tube I went looking for a better car seat for my 6 year old daughter. I found one! I have been so impressed with this new seat that I m now selling it. http://www.mypreciouskid.com/car-seat-safety-radian80.html

CAR SEAT FEATURES - It keeps her safer in a 5 point harness until she is 80 pounds! She is very happy with how comfortable it is. I love that it is narrower than the Britax. I can fit 3 across a bench seat in an SUV. Yet it is wider inside where she sits. If also folds up to fit easily in my truck or to carry thru an airport.

RADIAN 80 convertible car seat is the first and only convertible car seat that can holds children to 80 pounds in a 5 point harness. It also folds to a width of 6 ½ inches. It exceeds all US safety standards for infant car seats. This Radian car seat will probably be the only car seat you will ever need. It may be used for newborn infants all the way to children 80 pounds. Since many state require car seats until your child is 8 years or 80 pounds this Radian car seat may be all you need.

The Importance of a 5 point harness

THE IMPORTANCE OF A 5 point HARNESS: Have you moved your child to a booster seat without a 5 point harness before they are 4 years plus 40 pounds.
Please watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azgBhZfcqaQ

The most dangerous car seat MISTAKES:

Moving a child less than 1 year PLUS 20 pounds to forward facing. Keeping them rear facing even to 18 months is better. If you child is 9 months and 25 pounds they must still be REAR facing. If your child is 15 months and 18 pounds they must still be REAR facing

Taking a child out of 5 point harness before they are 4 years PLUS 40 pounds. And the car seat must be TOP tethered into your car. Car seat belts can fail. The tether protects your child. The BRITAX car seat has a 5 point harness that goes to 65 pounds.

Leaving a child in a regular 5 point harness after 40 pounds. Only the BRITAX car seat harness can go beyond 40 pounds. Using a regular car seat with harness after 40 pounds put your child at risk for it breaking. If you child is over 40 pounds but under age 5 get the BRITAX car seat with stronger harness.

Taking a child out of a booster seat before 6 years PLUS 60 pounds (some states say 8 years PLUS 80 pounds). Actually it is recommended that a child stay in a booster seat until they are 4 foot 8 inches in order to have a regular seat belt fit them safely.

MyPreciousKid.com turns 5 years old!

May 2006 marks the 5th year anniversary of MyPreciousKid.com! I am so excited to see where this journey has taken me.

In May 2001 I started making personalized ID cards for families that home schooled their children or those with adopted children.

In 2002 I started producing do-it-yourself ID kits for parents. These kits provided safety for children while keeping their family information private. I also started a rep program allowing other parents to buy wholesale and sell retail in home classes and online.

As the years have gone by parents have asked for more product. We added Medical Release Cards, Luggage Tags, Pet ID cards, Adult ID kits and Chore Charts. Then as our internet presence increased other companies started approaching us about selling their products.

2005 brought more products including ID Bracelets, Shoe Tag Tags, Baby Sling and ID Scopes bring us to a line of 50 products. Our Google rank of 5 brought us to the number one and number 2 spot on Google for many of our key word phrases. We also added a wholesale program.

2006 brought the introduction of safe BABY GEAR such as shopping cart covers, potty training products, baby sign language, Taggies and more to bring us to 70 products.

Today we enjoy a brisk business at MyPreciousKid.com with 75 products and more coming. We currently have a number of products on sale and are looking at several new lines for the fall season.

I am thrilled and excited to see how far MyPreciousKid.com has come in 5 years. I am thankful for the many awesome customers, reps and wholesale clients who follow our passion of keeping children safe.

Call me Mama

Call me Mama
By Kay Green, www.MyPreciousKid.com
Copyright 2005

I have always known I was meant to be a mom. As soon as I was big enough to pack a baby on my hip I borrowed babies anywhere I could find. At age 10 I started baby sitting. I cared for my niece and god-daughter whenever possible. At age 23 my husband and I had our first child. That beautiful baby girl made be know even more that I was destined by God to be a mother. Oh the joy of holding that precious bundle.

I was also blessed to attend the birth of 7 other precious babies over the years. Those children even though not birthed by me, became special children in my life. What a gift to be able to be present as new life emerges from within. The marvel of what God has created in us, through us.

God blessed us with 2 more children (a boy then a girl) in the next 5 years. I delighted in loving them, training them, teaching them, investing in these precious lives. MY precious husband continues to give me so much help and support in being the parents our children need. I LOVE being a mother. And my three precious children have taught me so much about love and joy.

Twelve years after the birth of our 3rd child we adopted a new born. That baby girl taught me even more about mothering. I learned that mothering is not about blood tie but about heart tie. I learned that I could breastfeed an adopted daughter in the same way I nursed my birth children. I learned that through prayer and careful watching I had the insight on how to parent this child, who was so different than my other three.

I learned that I can be an advocate to get the medical help needed for my child. I knew this child had an issue I could not put my finger on. I was certain something was out of alignment for her. I prayed and watched and pressed for information. I finally asked my doctor for testing to rule out some sensory issues. That testing brought the key to this child that I had been looking for. Through the process we gained so much wisdom and tools for being even better parents to this precious child.

I thank God everyday for the privilege of being mama to 4 incredible individuals. And I thank God for a husband who treats me with such respect and support. My family has given me so much joy and love in life. They have taught me things about myself. They have stretched me and caused me to reach farther than I knew possible. They have challenged and encouraged me. I am the person I am today because of these 4 people who call me Mama.

Car Seat Sharing Safety

Car Seat Sharing Safety
Can I pass my child's car seat on to a friend?
By Kay Green, www.MyPreciousKid.com
Copyright 2005

Your daughter has outgrown her car seat. What can you do with it? A friend is in need of a car seat. Can you safely pass it along? What things should you look for? How can I make sure it is safe to pass along my seat.

"Always ask if it has ever been in a car when there was an accident (sudden force can damage the plastic even though it is not noticeable to the naked eye) and is it less than 6 years old. The plastic does deteriorate over time, and 6 years is the longest you can use a car seat. We had car seats for my oldest granddaughter, who would have been 7 last Sept., and we couldn't use them for the newest baby because they were too old." Says Anita of http://www.blessedenterprises.org/

"If the car seat was made in the last 7-8 years, there should be an expiration date on it. My daughter will be 6 in May, and her car seat expires in October of 2005. That was the date imprinted on the car seat." says Cris of http://phoenixcandlelites.com/cimfundraiser.htm

THE TEST - These are both valid points. Before passing on a car seat I like to do the following:1. Be certain the seat was never in a car accident2. Check the age of the seat3. Check with the seat manufacturer for recalls4. Check for any breakage or tearingIf the car seat is free from accident, recalls, and breakage and the seat belts are strong then you can pass the car seat onto a friend. If your seat does not pass the test then please do not pass the car seat along.

RIGHT SIZE - Be sure your child is in the RIGHT size car seat. Every car seat comes with weight and height requirements for that seat. Please follow them. I have often seen children riding in car seats clearly not the right size for them. I saw a 15 month old child in an infant carrier car seat. The mother insisted that because he was under 20 pounds she could not move him to a front facing. She was right. BUT what he needed was a rear facing convertible car seat made for a child of his height and weight. His head was all the way to the top of the car seat. It needed to be no less than one inch from the top of the seat.

IN AN ACCIDENT - If you own a car seat that is ever in a car accident please mark the plastic of the frame with a permanent marker "IN ACCIDENT - DESTROY" then break it down and put it in the garbage. Your own car insurance will almost always pay for a replacement car seat after a car accident. Call them to request this. Do not risk putting your child in a car seat that could have underlying damage that puts your child at risk.

CAR SEAT ID CARD - Always have an car seat ID card attached to your child's car seat. This card should have your child's name, age, weight, height, medical info, 5 contact numbers for family members and a medical release signature. This card can make the difference in getting quick care or finding a family member to come get your child in an accident where you can not care for your child. We as moms love to share our baby items with friends. With car seats it is very important that we carefully look at all the criteria before passing along car seats to be certain the child we want to share with is safe as well.

Shopping Cart Safety

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2005

Shopping Cart Safety Rules

1. Always cover the shopping cart with a shopping cart cover.

2. Make sure your child is securely buckled into the shopping cart.

3. Wipe down the cart with anti-bacterial wipes.

4. Do not allow your child to stand up in the shopping cart.

5. Do not allow older children to stand on the side/back and ride as it may tip the chart.

6. Never leave your child alone in the shopping cart.

Protect others from your child's germs and diaper leaks too.

HAVE YOU EVER had a sick child. You take them to the doctor, then run to the store to pick up the prescription. Of course your child sits in the shopping cart while you are there. Putting them in the shopping cart cover protects both your child from other peoples germs during their low resistance ill time, PLUS protects other children from your child's germs.

HAVE YOU EVER had your child's diaper leak while out shopping? Of course you can not take the time to sterilize the shopping cart they were sitting in? If you child is sitting in your own shopping cart cover then all the mess is confined. Simply roll up the shopping cart cover, Velcro it closed and throw it in your diaper bag. All the mess is inside. At home simply put the shopping cart cover in the washer.

HAVE YOU EVER had a teething baby with you while shopping. Of course they lean over and put their mouth on the nice smooth shopping car bar UGH! How many germs are on that bar. With a clean shopping cart cover your child is chewing on the toys and fabric you brought with you. You know they are clean. You know your child is safe from germs.

Safe Sensory Toys Help Kids!

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2005

SENSORY INTEGRATION - My youngest child was recently diagnosed with Sensory Integration disorder. And my third child was a kinesthetic learner child. So over the course of time I have founds toys and activities that sensory and kinesthetic children love. I wanted to give my children toys that were safe but gave them sensory input.

TAGGIES BLANKET- Taggies produce a wonderful line of blankies, toys and books with a sensory feel. Taggies have tags of satin ribbon sew in folds all around the edges. Babies love to rub these satin tags between their fingers and on their face. The fleece of the blankets are soft and comfortable. The 12x12 Taggie Small makes a perfect travel companion for babies and toddlers.

TAGGIES TOYS - Taggies also make a Take-a-long toy with the same fleece and tags. It hooks easily to the car seat or stroller to take with you. The newest Taggies product is the I Love You Book with tags sewn on the edges. I love to take these with me in the car seat and stroller. Sensory kids love to have a familiar item they can count on when going to new places. It gives them a calm feeling.

BABY RATTLES - Discovery Toys carries a line of safe sensory rattles that your babies will love. These are the highest quality safe toys your children will love. My favorite is the rain stick rattle. It is filled with bright colored beads the fall up and down the stick making a soothing sounds. I needed to have a good variety of these kinds of rattles and baby toys so I could swap them in and out of our bag keeping her interested.

SHOPPING CART COVERS - Shopping carts present a new challenge for sensory kids. They want to experience everything, and most through their mouth. I always worried if the last child in that seat was ill or well? And have you ever had a diaper leak in the cart UGH So I found a great shopping cart cover that not only protects my child but also gives them a sensory delight with attached toys and fabrics that make a great crinkle noise that my baby loves.

GAME BOY - As Haley has gotten to preschool age I was looking for a take a long toy that gives her sensory input. ......................................

Tsunami in Asia leaves orphans

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2005

ORPHANS - Today my heart is breaking for the many children left orphaned by the tsunami is Asia last week. As an adoptive mom my heart goes our to them. Many of these children were vacationing with parents from other countries. These children had no ID. Can you imagine how much it could help a child is this situation to have a ID bracelet? The ID bracelet or Shoe ID Tag could contain their parent name, hotel where staying, home phone, plus the name and number of a relative in their home town that could be contacted? Do you protect your child is this way when traveling?

CRUISE SAFETY - I got the privilege to be on a cruise ship this past month. I was again surprised to see so many children on board and on shore for the excursions with no physical ID. What if the child got separated from the parent on board a ship of 2500 people. An ID bracelet could contain the parents name and room number plus a name and number of a relative back home. And when onshore excursions the bracelet could contain the ships name and room number and parents name too. Our ID bracelets are even waterproof so can be used while your child is swimming.

PROTECTION - It really is a shame we have to be so proactive in our children's safety. But this world is changing. And we have to do everything we can to protect our children. It is like life insurance you buy hoping you never need to use it. We all hope and pray it never happens to us but it can happen in a moment in time. Do not be left say "I wish I had?"........................................................................

Sensory Integration Safety

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2004

Child safety has always been a passion of mine. I am mom to 4 great kids. Our youngest daughter (adopted at birth) has always been a bit of a wanderer and given me a few more grey hairs. I have been even more diligent about making sure she ALWAYS is wearing a physical ID product every day.

SID - Sensory Integration Disorder My 4 1/2 yr old daughter Haley has recently been diagnosis with SID. This diagnosis was an answer to so many questions we have had about her - why she needed to be touched to sleep - why she would not eat certain foods - why she was always moving. This diagnosis has so many facets and looks differently for all children but mostly they either crave sensory input or avoid it. Their brain system to handle sensory information works differently than for other people.

Infancy - As a result Haley has tightly bonded to me as an infant. She solved all stressful situations by nursing. She wanted to be held at all times (mostly in a
baby sling ). She cried if anyone else held her. She required one of us to be holding or touching her at all times in order to sleep. And she slept very little (30 minute naps). She needed the physical touch in order to sooth down to sleep.

Toddler - As a toddler she was constantly on the move. She is afraid of nothing. She is always looking to climb higher, jump taller, run faster, sing louder. So when we are out of the house there is always the worry that she will wander away. Her
ID bracelet with my cell number and phone number in it, give me some peace of mind. When she was tiny I could keep her in a cart. As she is getting bigger that is harder. She loved toys that gave her sensory feedback like TAGGIES.

Preschool - As a preschooler now, she is also sometimes without me: at school, church, a friends. I want to be sure if she should wander away from someone else she is protected. So she wears an ID bracelet (even when swimming) and has
ID stickers in her shoes. I have taught her that if mom is lost to find another mommy and give them her shoe to call me. I also make sure if anyone else is caring for her they have a signed medical release card that explains her SID diagnosis and needs plus her doctors number.

SID - Sensory Integration Disorder is many times mis-diagnosed as ADHD. And while most ADHD kids also have SID not all SID kids are ADHD. SID can also be associated with Autism and Aspersers and other disorders. However SID can be the single diagnosis for a child, like Haley. It is suggested that roughly 25% of all kids have some form of SID but most are mild enough they function within it.

Therapy for her includes meeting with an occupational therapist weekly to give her tools to regulate her system. ...........................

Vacation Safety

By Kay Green http://www.mypreciouskid.com/ Copyright 2004

You are going to Disneyland (or other vacation) with your children and want to make sure they are safe. We can help protect your children and give you peace of mind too. We have recently been linked on the http://www.wdwinfo.com/ Disneyland forum boards as a great product for Disneyland traveling families. Below are my favorite Disneyland travel ID products plus some ideas for keeping your children safe while there.

Q: During summer vacation to Disneyland, I am concerned with keeping my children safe. What do you suggest I do if they get lost?

A: As concerned parents, there are several things we can do to protect our children at Disneyland or on vacation.

1. Have each child (ages 0-18) wear a physical ID at all times.

2. Play the "What if ..." game with your children. If you ask my toddler, "What if Mommy gets lost?" (they never think they are lost) she will tell you, "Find another mommy, take off my shoe (or bracelet or scope) and ask the mommy to call you!"

3. Make a game of remembering what color each of you is wearing to Disneyland each day. If you are at a large group, wear matching T- shirts to help identify your group.

4. Have a plan: If we get separated, stay where you are, and Mommy will find you. If you are scared, ask another mommy to stay with you and call me.

5. Have a photo ID of each child in your wallet. In case of separation, you have a photo and description to help others looking for the child. Each adult with the group needs these.

6. Have multiple family contacts and telephone numbers in the glove box, in your purse, in backpacks, on shoe stickers, on strollers, etc. Add numbers for family members not traveling with you (grandma, sister, uncle, brother).

7. Every child and teen should carry an ID card with family contact numbers, cell phone numbers plus a medical release signature. Put it in their wallet, in their backpack and on their car seat and stroller.

8. Teach the child to drop to the ground and scream loudly, "He is not my daddy/mommy. HELP!" if someone tries to take them.

If your child has a hard time traveling bring along a favorite toy of lovie. That will make the vacation more pleasant for everyone. TAGGIES make a wonderful sensory blanket with little satin tags around the edge. Many children find this comforting while traveling.

Look below for some great safety product to protect your child on your next vacation.

August is the month we begin to think about "Back to School". You know the normal tradition of buying new clothes and new school supplies. It is also the month to think about sending our kids "Back To School Safely". Will your kids be safe and protected when they go back to school?

Here is a list of 8 ways to can protect your child and their belongings.

1. LABELS - We label our kids clothes and belongings. Lets also protect our kids by having them all wear a physical ID everyday at school. That can be an ID Scope, ID Bracelet, Shoe stickers or tags. This leaves your contact phone numbers with your child at all times.

2. TEACH your kids what to do if they are ever lost. I teach my daughter to find another mommy and take off her shoe and ask the mom to use the sticker information to call me on my cell phone.

3. CODE WORD- Teach them to never go anywhere with someone they do not know. Have a family CODE WORD that only family members know.

4. WALK or DRIVE them to and from school and the bus stop. In this day and age it is not safe to let our kids walk alone or wait alone for a bus.

5. IDENTIFY - Use shoe stickers to identify all their belongings with your family name and several contact phone numbers. Do not however have the child's name in plain view to strangers (on back packs and lunch boxes). Put the info INSIDE.

6. FRIENDS - Know your children's friends, their names, addresses, and phone numbers. Remind them they are to never go to a friends after school without calling home FIRST!

7. DAILY PLAN - Talk each morning about the days plans and remind them to call you BEFORE changing any part of the daily plan.

8. MEDICAL RELEASE - Give every person who ever cares for your child in your absence a Medical Release ID Card. ..........................
